How to Prepare the Substrate for 3D Epoxy floor Installation; A guide by Bettercoat Company 3D epoxy floors suppliers and installers

With 3D epoxy floors now being increasingly accepted among many commercial and residential property owners, Bettercoat Company deemed it important to help our clients and any other interested party in understanding how to prepare the substrate for the epoxy 3D floor installation.


As with virtually all surfaces, the floor must be absolutely clean for the use of a 3D floor image. This means you have to clean it – make sure it is not only dust and dirt free, but also grease-free. With the 3D floor, there is also a small special feature that is not so important for other floor coverings: the substrate must be absolutely flat, i.e., free of any unevenness. This can massively impair the quality of the 3D look.

Fill all cracks and holes with a suitable filler and putty. Let the compound dry well. Then remove dust and dirt from the floor using suitable tools such as a sweeper or vacuum cleaner. Edges and corners of the floor must be well sealed so that they are completely waterproof. Use commercially available edge insulation strips for this.


Depending on the substrate to which you want to apply the 3D floor, you may also need to roughen it to give the primer that will be applied later better adhesion. Also, remember that the substrate must be absolutely dry, otherwise the sticking properties of the adhesive will be impaired.

 

Now, first apply a self-leveling epoxy primer so that the substrate is really perfectly level. This must be allowed to dry completely before you can continue with the next step. Which is the installation of the 3D image to the floor.
